Winchell Carroll Obituary

Winchell Smith Carroll 75, of Bryn Mawr, PA, died September 4, 2012. Win graduated from Yale University where he majored in history. He served as a photographer for the Yale Daily News. Upon graduation, he spent his career in the computer industry, coming to Philadelphia to work for Sperry, now Unisys. After his retirement, Win dedicated himself to historic preservation. He was proud to serve as a governor of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, president of the Philadelphia chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, and an honorary vice-president of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolution, where he co-chaired Let Freedom Ring, the nationwide ringing of the bells on Independence Day, for 15 years. Win served as a director of the Friends of Independence National Historical Park, a director of the Flag Day Association of Philadelphia, and a founding director of the Paoli Battlefield Preservation Fund. He served as president of the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, working to establish the 685-mile long W3R National Historic Trail. He also served as president of the American Revolution Patriots Fund, which raised funds to restore Washington Square in downtown Philadelphia. He is preceded in death by his parents Andrew David Carroll, Sr. and Dorothy French Carroll. Win is survived by his children Linda Emery (Rick), Winchell Carroll, Jr. (Lisa), Alison McSlarrow (Kyle), Geoffrey Carroll (Joanna), and Sarah Tellefson (Erik). He is also survived by six grandchildren, his brother Andrew David Carroll, Jr. (Mary), and his niece and nephew. Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral service, 11 a.m. Friday, September 21 at Washington Memorial Chapel, Route 23 Valley Forge National Historical Park, Valley Forge, PA 19481, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Interment Washington Memorial Chapel Cemetery. Contributions to the Philadelphia Continental Chapter SAR, Chapter Treasurer, 1305 Robynwood Lane, West Chester, PA 19380 would be appreciated by the family.
