Mary Gibson Obituary
Mary Harding Porter Gibson passed away peacefully on October 3, 2013, at the age of 91. Mary was born in New Haven, CT, and grew up in Haverford, PA. Mary met and married the first love of her life, Herdman Snowden "Tony" Porter, while singing in The Savoy Company with mutual friends. They relocated to Hastings, NY, and were blessed with two children, Teddy and Julie. Tony's unexpected passing brought Mary and her children to her husband's hometown, Rose Valley, PA. There she was widely welcomed into the lives and homes of her sisters and their families and the extended Porter family. In later years, she met and married Dr. William Blake Gibson of Media, adding step children Debbie and Jeff to her immediate family. She was devoted to her husbands, children and stepchildren, grandchildren, great grandchild, and the countless children of those close to her in family or community. Mary also loved and spent considerable time enjoying the great outdoors and organized sports such as those at the Shipley School, the Merion Cricket Club or while enjoying tennis with close friends and family at Rose Valley Swimming Pool. Baseball and the Phillies were a seasonal focus of her life. In later years, she became an avid walker of Rose Tree Park, Tyler Arboretum and Ridley Creek State Park. Wherever she went, she was usually accompanied by one of her many beloved dogs. While her primary focus was always as a home maker, Mary's career life included Bryn Mawr Hospital, The School in Rose Valley and the Media Clinic. She focused her volunteer energies through Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, including over a decade in their inner-city Youth Tutoring program and as a member of the Pastoral Search committee. She participated in Bible studies, and her Church was the central part of her spiritual life, of which she was a fourth-generation member. Gardening, reading and going to the beach, especially visiting Haven Beach, NJ, and Lake Muskoka, Ontario, were some of her favorite things to do, but the highlight of her life was being "Mimi" and spending time with her grandchildren. Whether it was teaching board games, reading stories or kicking a ball around, she always had joy on her face and love in her heart, and will be greatly missed by all that had the privilege of knowing her. Mary is the beloved wife of the late Herdman Snowden "Tony" Porter and late Dr. William Blake Gibson; loving mother to Edward Porter (Phyllis) and Julia Knight (John); stepmother to Deborah Holl (Rob) and Jeffrey Gibson; "Mimi" to Luisa, William, Grady, Kelsey, Morgan and Noah; great grandmother to Ella Ruth; dear sister of the late Middy Craig and the late Julia Hunter; and special aunt to many. Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service at 11:00 am on October 26, 2013, in the Chapel of the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Av, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010. There will be a Reception immediately following, in the Church's Congregational Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mary's name to Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, Tyler Arboretum or the Delaware County S.P.C.A. Stuard Funeral Home
