Nicholas Salios Obituary

The Rev. Nicholas Salios of Worcester, PA died on Sunday, May 15, 2016. He is the beloved husband of Rose L. Salios (nee Stewart) and the father of Sharon Thompson (Michael) of Olean, NY; Susan Winterode, (the late Al Winterode) of West Chester PA; and Stephen M. Salios of Seaford, DE. He is also the loving stepfather of Steven R. Cooper (Renee) of Lexington, MA; Nancy C. Gregory (Joseph); and Jeffrey T. Cooper (Stacey). He is also survived by his grandchildren Michael Gregory, Kelly Gregory, Ryan Gregory, Laura Cooper, Calvin Cooper, and Taylor Cooper. Born in Elberton GA, he later became a native of Greensboro NC. Rev. Salios grew up in the Greek Orthodox Church. After high school, he entered the U.S. Navy and served his country for three years in WWII. After that, he attended B. Jones University in South Carolina earning a Bachelor’s Degree preparing for ministry. He then entered into Eastern Baptist Seminary (Palmer) in Pennsylvania earning a Bachelor of Divinity Degree and Master of Divinity Degree. Rev. Salios then continued with post-graduate studies at the University of Delaware and St. Bonaventure University in New York. He later studied at Christian Seminary in Missouri earning a Doctor of Ministry Degree. In the National Guard in Delaware, he attained the rank of Captain and Lieutenant and became an Army military Chaplain for twenty years. He received duty at Ft. Dix, Ft. Bragg, Ft. Meade, Ft. Belvoir, and Valley Forge attaining the rank of Major. Rev. Salios was also awarded the Army Commendation of Medal for Service. He also served on the staff of American Baptist Churches and National Ministries. His mission assignments took him to Haiti, Nicaragua, Managua, El Salvador, the Middle East, and Rome. An ecumenical chaplain, he was later endorsed in 1980 and commissioned by American Baptist Churches as a Special Interest Missionary and assigned as Industrial Chaplain at Philadelphia Park and Penn National, serving 2000 employees for twenty years. Rev. Salios also became a counselor of Certified Addictions through the Alliance of Substance Abuse Therapists. As a result of his long-time commitment to chaplaincy and ministry, he was inducted into the Chapel of Four Chaplains in Philadelphia. As a mentor and teacher of chaplains across the country, he was assigned by National RTCA as their national field director, organizing new ministries and placing new chaplaincies where needed across the country, culminating in the award of Chaplain Emeritus RTCA in the year 2000.Since that time “Chaplain Nick” has served with the Plymouth Township Police Department , ACTS Hospice, and has completed thirteen interim pastorates through 2013. The Rev. Nicholas Salios’ Life Celebration will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 9:30-10:50 a.m. at Lower Merion Baptist Church, 911 New Gulph Rd. Bryn Mawr PA followed by his service of remembrance at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Lower Merion Baptist Church Cemetery. Donations in Rev. Salios’ memory may be made to the church at the above address. Family services are entrusted under the care of Boyd-Horrox-Givnish, East Norriton. 1-800 GIVNISH.
