Joyce Ann (Kempf) Hackman Obituary
Joyce Ann (Kempf) Hackman, 83, of Haverford, died peacefully on May 24. The daughter of Winfield and Ethel Kempf, Joyce grew up in Merion and went to Lower Merion High School. She attended Penn State and Drexel, each for one year, before marrying Robert Barton Hackman of Narberth. They lived in Ardmore and Strafford before moving to Berkeley Heights, NJ. When they returned to the area they lived in Wynnewood. After Bob died, Joyce met Rowland Lex. They were together for 27 years. After his passing she moved to Haverford. Joyce returned to college while in New Jersey. She completed her undergraduate degree at Drexel, and then earned her master's at Villanova, both in library science. She was a dedicated, dynamic librarian at Chesnutwald and Oakmont elementary schools in Haverford. She loved turning kids on to books, and finding resources for teachers. Until she had a stroke three years ago, Joyce was an incredibly active woman. She was a member of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir for 35 years. The choir toured internationally, and Joyce and Rowland went on choir trips to Russia, Eastern Europe, and Brazil while also traveling widely on their own. Joyce was also a deacon and a committed member of the church's Hunger Task Force. Joyce and Rowland were long-time members of Germantown Cricket Club, loved bridge, had season tickets to the Philadelphia Orchestra and several theatres, and frequented jazz clubs. Joyce is survived by her children: Sandra Hackman (Ken Prescott) of Bedford, MA; Patricia Klepacki (Dan) of Moorestown, NJ; Julie Morgan (the late Bryan) of Marietta, GA; Karen Wollentin (Andrew) of Severna Park, MD; and Robert Hackman (Carol) of Ardmore. She is also survived by a brother, Winfield Kempf (Elizabeth) of Radnor, 12 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to attend her memorial service at 2 pm on Monday, June 2, in the chapel of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Ave, 19091. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Hunger Committee at the church, or to Hospice Compassus, 711 York Rd. #2, Willow Grove, 19090. Arrangements by Scanlin Funeral Home, Chalfont, PA.
