Joseph L. Jackson Jr. Obituary
Joseph L. Jackson, Joseph Leo Jackson Jr., 84, of Downingtown, Pa, passed away after a long illness January 7, 2012. Joe was born on April 8, 1927 in Newburgh, New York to Joseph L. Jackson Sr. and Catherine (Nee Murphy) Jackson, and was raised and schooled in Newburgh. Following his 1943 high school graduation, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a radio operator aboard a naval vessel in the South Pacific during the latter stages of World War II. After the war, Joe enrolled under the GI Bill at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA. There he met his future wife, Pittsburgh native and fellow World War II veteran Marian Jean (Nee Yunker), and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Business in June, 1950. Joe enjoyed a long career with Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania, starting as a management trainee (including cable splicing work atop utility poles) and moving into positions of increasing authority while relocating his family throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Joe was an integral member of the team responsible for launching one of Bell Telephone's earliest automated billing systems in the early 1960's in Greensburg, PA. Eventually settling in the Philadelphia area, Joe became Treasurer of Bell of Pennsylvania and Diamond State Telephone Company in 1982, and later Vice President/Comptroller of Bell Atlantic. After his 1989 retirement from Bell Atlantic, Joe joined CIP Capital Management, serving as an officer and Director until 2007. For several years he was also Vice President of Administration and Director of Star Sprinkler Corporation. A devoted husband and devout Catholic, Joe married Marian in April, 1949. They lived in Berwyn, PA from 1964 to 2004, where Joe was an active member and dedicated volunteer of St. Monica Church. In 2004 he and Marian relocated to Downingtown, PA, where he became a parishioner and volunteer of St. Joseph Church. Joe will always be remembered fondly for his intellect, generosity, humility, and legendary quick wit. Beloved by his children and grandchildren, Joe was renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge of sports as an avid supporter of Philadelphia-area teams. In addition to his wife of sixty-three years, Joe is survived by 1 sister; Helen (John) Smith of New Port Richey, Florida; 6 children: Thomas (Robin) Jackson, William (Patrice) Jackson, Anne (Stephen) Murray, Patricia (Michael) Gonoude, Ellen Jackson and John Jackson. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends may call on Friday, January 13, 2012 at St. Joseph's Church; 388 Manor Ave., Downingtown, PA 19335 from 11AM-12PM. A memorial Mass will begin at 12 Noon. Burial will be private per the request of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Joe's honor to Neighborhood Hospice; 795 East Marshall St. Suite #204, West Chester, PA 19380. Arrangements are with Alleva Funeral Home, Inc.
