Elsbeth Fuller Swope Obituary
Elsbeth Fuller Swope, of Merion Station, PA died in Vitas Hospice at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in the early morning hours of February 20th from complications due to Alzheimer's at the age of 89. Elsbeth was born in New York City on October 6th, 1923 to Carlton and Dorothy Fuller. She grew up in northern New Jersey and then Boston, attending the Summit School, Kent Place and later graduating from Smith College during World War II. Elsbeth was a young actress of some renown and pursued that career as far as several off-Broadway productions before settling down in New York City as a secretary, where she met her husband, Carlyle Swope, when both were employed at Slick Airways. They moved to the Doylestown area for several years where they pursued farming, then followed Carlyle's new job to Providence Rhode Island in 1950 and then finally settled in Merion on the Main Line in 1958 where Carlyle remained involved in regional transportation administration and trucking. Beth joined Alcoholics Anonymous in 1963 and was preparing to celebrate her 50th anniversary, having remained deeply involved and committed and having ministered to and counseled literally hundreds of people in need over the years. She also belonged to several churches over the latter part of her life and hosted a Bible study in her home for many years. Carlyle passed in the summer of 2001. Beth is survived by her three children; Perry and wife Cindy in McLean, Va, Darcy in Purcellville, Va and Paul and wife Jenny in Derry, NH as well as her 30+ year good friend and companion, Blair Green, and 11 grandchildren. Beth was an extremely loving and caring woman of uncommon kindness, generosity, acceptance and quiet spirituality who will be sorely missed, but whose life was a celebration in its own right. A family interment service will be held at West Laurel Hill Cemetery on April 13th, 2013 with a Memorial Service to follow at 3:30 p.m. at Overbrook Presbyterian Church, 6376 City Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19151. A reception to follow. Gifts and any memorial contributions may be given to Overbrook Presbyterian Church.
