MANCHESTER Barbara Virginia Hamilton Binkerd Philips Monahan, 97, widow of Thomas C. Monahan, past building inspector for the town of Manchester, has died. She was most recently a resident at Ellington Road, South Windsor, Conn., and a longtime resident of Manchester, Conn. She was the daughter of Robert Studebaker Binkerd and Bertha Virginia Hamilton and courtesy niece of Richard Spencer Childs, native of Manchester and originator of the council manager form of municipal government.

Born during a storm in Brooklyn, N.Y., she with her two older brothers, Alfred Cunningham and Robert Hamilton, spent their early life between New York City and Dorset, Vt.

She is survived by her step-daughter Celeste Ester Monahan McLaughlin, Houston, Texas;, her dear friends, Thomas and Gay Mertz, Manchester, Conn., and their daughter, Dawn Day. Special remembrance is extended to her surviving friends and family, her sister-in-law, Joan Binkerd of Greenwich, Conn.; John Philips of Silver Spring, Md.; Caroline Philips of Norwood, Calif.; Janice Miller Stridick of Merchantville, N.J., and Liz Spencer Forkel of Portsmouth, N.H.; special friend, Robert F. Silva of Coventry, Conn.; Margaret Meachem of Dorset, Vt., and Jean Clifford of Keene Valley, N.Y.

She graduated in 1937 from Kathryn Gibbs Secretarial School as an executive secretary, received her bachelor's degree from Middlebury College in 1936, attended Bank Street School of Education in 1948, and held a Master's degree from the University of Hartford.

A long time teacher for the Town of Manchester, Conn., she taught kindergarten at Nathan Hale and was instrumental in the first Head Start program in the town. Teaching children was her joy and passion.

Barbara was an active member of the Manchester Municipal Retirees Association and lifetime member of the Manchester Retired Teachers group.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Burial will be at a later date. A memorial service to celebrate Barbara's life is planned for Friday, May 10, 2013, at 2 p.m. at HOLMES FUNERAL HOME, Main Street, Manchester, CT. A private memorial service will be arranged for the residents of Emeritus in South Windsor.
