Florence J. Shannon

1934-2013 Florence "Flo" J. Shannon, 79 of Port Charlotte, Fla.,, formerly of East Dorset, Vt., and Mineola, N.Y., passed away on June 20, 2013, at her home.

She was born to the late John E. and Catherine (Liebmann) Shannon on March 2, 1934, in Bronx, N.Y.

Flo graduated in 1952 from Mineola High School. After graduation, she accepted a position with Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO) where she worked for 38 years! She retired at the age of 57.

After retiring, she moved to her home on Danby Mountain Road in East Dorset, a three-bedroom home she built with her own hands on five beautiful acres! She was truly an "independent self-sufficient woman," a role model to young women aspiring to do anything they could dream of. She relocated to Port Charlotte, Fla., in 1995. She was a longtime beloved member of the Disconnected Piecers Quilt Guild and the Peace River Quilters' Guild.

Flo was preceded in death by her mother, Catherine (Liebmann) Shannon; father, John E. Shannon and her brother, Jack Shannon.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Marion (Busching) Shannon; nieces and nephews, Patricia (Shannon) and Richard Arnone, Catherine (Shannon) Arvanitopoulos, and John and Kelly (O'Meara) Shannon; great-nieces and nephew, Katie Arnone, Jackie (Arnone) and Matthew Caglianone, Audrey Arnone, Lindsay Shannon, Sofia Arvanitopoulos and Skylar Shannon, and her great-great-niece, Giuliana Caglianone.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Celebration of Life with Shared Memories will be held Saturday, July 20, from 12 to 4 p.m. at McKee Funeral Home, 14538 Tamiami Trail, North Port, FL 34287.
