Janet Wood Rice

Janet Wood Rice, 87, of Dorset, Vermont, formerly of Summit, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 27 at Equinox Terrace in Manchester, VT. Daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Dennis Wood and the late Mabel Janet Scull, Janet was born in Orange, NJ. She was raised in Irvington, NJ and was a graduate of Irvington High School. She continued her education at The America Academy of Dramatic Arts and held many leading roles in local NJ productions, primarily with The Strollers in Maplewood, NJ.

In 1947 she married the love of her life, Garrison Robert Rice, and shortly thereafter had two children, Garrison JR and Elizabeth.

Janet was a former member of Christ Church in Short Hills, NJ.

Janet was a gourmet cook and gracious hostess to both friends and family. An avid gardener and a member of the Summit Garden Club, she opened her gardens for many of their fundraisers. Janet was a dedicated volunteer at The Reeves-Reed Arboretum in Summit. She was a devotee of film, theatre and ballet, an avid bridge player and an enthusiastic traveler.

Janet was a member of the Baltusrol Golf Club of Springfield, NJ, Ekwanok Country Club of Manchester, VT and a former member of Sankaty Head Golf Club in Nantucket, MA. She was club champion of all three.

Along with son Garrison and daughter Elizabeth Wilson (nee, Rice), Janet was dearly loved by daughter-in-law Joanne, son-in-law Scott, grand daughters Emily, Kathryn, Janet, Abigail, Sara, sister Nancy and brother-in-law Dick, nieces and nephews the late Douglas, Jennifer, Stephen, Vicky, Cathy, and grand nieces and nephews Lydia and Sam.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A service will be held at Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester, VT on Sunday, August 11 at 1:00 PM.
