Mildred Ruth Wood Carman
1919 - 2013 ORANGE CITY, FLA. Mildred Ruth Wood Carman Bugar Hancock, 94, a resident of Orange City, formerly of Manchester, passed away Dec. 11, 2013, at Majestic Oaks Nursing Home in Orange City. Mildred was born in Trenton, N.J., on April 2, 1919, the daughter of Harry J. and Pearl (Hemming) Wood. She was raised on Long Island, moved to Manchester in 1965, and to Florida in 2003. She worked as an executive secretary in the Public Schools of Long Island and then Manchester. Mildred was a member of the Manchester Country Club, where she enjoyed playing golf, and of the First Congregational Church of Manchester. She was an avid bridge player and an excellent seamstress; taught Sunday School and was a Girl Scout Leader. She worked in radio during WWII with Perry Como and Milton Berle. Millie loved her family and cherished time spent with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy C. Bryant and husband, Tim, of Pawlet, Vt.; step children, Brian Benson and wife Susan, of Manchester, Joan Ritter of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Carolyn Layden and husband, Ed, of Tucson, Ariz., Rick Hancock and wife, Nancy, of Wading River, N.Y., Jamie Hancock and wife Amy, of Wilkes Barre, Pa., Jackie Sargood and husband, Skip, of Manchester, Mary Herba and husband, Karl, of Syracuse, N.Y.; daughter-in-law, Mary Hancock; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Mildred was predeceased by her husbands, Nelson Carman, Frank Bugar, and Fredrick Hancock; by son, Stephen Carman; by stepson, Robert Hancock; son-in-law, Leo Ritter, and granddaughter, Heather Lee Bryant. FUNERAL NOTICE: A celebration of life for Mildred was held Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at the Pawlet Community Church. Interment will be in the spring.
