Susan McDermott, of Bondville, Vt., and of, Hertford, N.C., died Saturday, December 22, 2012 in her home at Albemarle Plantation.Susan was born in Queens, N.Y., and was the daughter of the late William and Evelyn Hall Krafchuk.
Among her survivors are her husband, Peter McDermott, her sisters Bonnie of Tetonia, Idaho and Elizabeth of Ipswich, Mass.
Susan is a graduate of Saint Lawrence University, Canton, N.Y. After her graduation Susan taught school in Connecticut returning to New York to work in the retail and insurance industries.
Peter and Susan were married on January 25th 1975 and in December of 1976 moved full time to Vermont to open The Mad Batter, originally in South Londonderry and then Manchester, Vt. After The Mad Batter, Susan eventually became the Managing Director of the Bennington County Meals on Wheels. She retired from this position some years ago to spend time in North Carolina and Vermont.
Susan was a Mentor at The Flood Brook School, taught for Literacy Volunteers of America and French at The Mountain School Winhall, a position which she loved. She enjoyed her time working with the Winhall Beautification Committee. Susan had a beautiful voice singing in college and with The Albemarle Chorale.
Susan was passionate about animals and the bird book was never too far away. She was an avid kayaker and spent time paddling the lakes of Vermont and the Albemarle Sound of North Carolina. Music, reading, yoga, gardening, watercolor painting were a few of her many interests.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, Manchester, Vt., on January 25th, 2013 at 10 a.m. A reception will follow at the Church.
