O'Neil, Jr.

1930 - 2014 DORSET, VT James W. O'Neil, Jr., 84, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday evening, Oct 1, 2014. He was born Apr. 17, 1930 in Far Rockaway, N.Y., son of the late James W. O'Neil and Florence C. O'Neil. He grew up in Woodmere on Long Island, where he attended local schools. He attended Xavier High School in New York City, Manhattan College and Columbia Law School, graduating in 1954. While at Columbia, he was elected president of the Livingston Chapter of PHI ALPHA DELTA fraternity. Jim was engaged in the practice of law in New York City for 17 years, then Westport, Conn. for several years and in Manchester, Dorset and from his residence. He was a member of the New York State Bar Association for more than 50 years. He also was a member of the American Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the Connecticut Bar Association and the Vermont Bar Association. He was a weekend warrior serving for 8 years as a member of Naval Reserve Squadron VR 832 at U.S. NAS, NY (Floyd Bennett Field). He also was a member of Hose 3 of the Rockville Center, N.Y. Fire Department. Upon moving to Weston, CT, he was elected a life member. After moving to Weston, Jim became a member of both the Weston Fire Department and the Ambulance Squad. When Jim moved to Vermont in 1974, he served as a member of the Manchester Rescue Squad for a number of years. He also had been a member of the Dorset Fire Department. Jim is survived by his wife Evelyn, son, James W. O'Neil, III, his wife, Mia C. O'Neil and two grandsons, Liam and Torin O'Neil of Dorset, his late brother John's wife Joan O'Neil, of Plymouth, MA, an aunt Marie Loughman of Cedarhurst, NY, and cousins, nieces and nephews.
