Herbert "Bill" Bowen Obituary
Herbert "Bill" Bowen died peacefully on June 28, 2018 surrounded by his wife and children. Bill, also known as Dad and BumBum, is survived by his wife of 55 years Judith Barry Bowen, his five children, Paula Bowen of Charleston, South Carolina, Kathleen Bowen Harrington and her husband Kevin of East Dorset, Vt, William Bowen of Anchorage, Alaska, Patricia Bowen Thompson and her husband Dan of St. Albans, Vt and Daniel Bowen and his wife Jennifer of Peru, Vt and eleven grandchildren, Colin Thompson, Elijah Thompson, Hannah Harrington, Conor Harrington, Liam Thompson, Finn Donnelly, Niamh Donnelly, Charlie Thompson, Maura Thompson, Louis Bowen and Lemoni Bowen.

Bill was born on October 20, 1938, the son of Norene and Byron Bowen. He was a resident of East Dorset for 75 years and for the last 5 years, spent his time between his Vermont home and his home in The Villages, Florida.

Bill was a member of the Burr and Burton class of 1956. A scholar and an athlete, he was class President, Captain and All-Star member of the Men's Basketball and Baseball teams. He graduated from Ithaca College in 1960 and a received a Master's Degree from Castleton State College in 1982. He went on to a 40-year career in Education dedicating 39 of those years to the Manchester Elementary Middle School where he taught Physical Education, coached all athletic teams and served as Principal and Assistant Principal. He was at the forefront of the development and implementation of the middle school philosophy at the Manchester Elementary and Middle School, creating a model middle school well ahead of its time. In 2000 Bowen Field was dedicated to Bill for his many years of loyal service and the impact he had on the children and families of Manchester. In 2008 he was inducted into the BBA Sports Hall of Fame as a Sports Legend.

After retiring from education and not one to sit still, Bill started Bowen's Pool Supply and Maintenance, which he successfully ran for 10 years. Active throughout his life, he enjoyed playing golf, tending his beautiful gardens, cooking and spending time with family and friends. He was passionate about sports and enjoyed coaching, watching, and playing them throughout his life. He never missed the opportunity to watch his grandson, Conor, play high school basketball.

Bill will be remembered for his steadfast loyalty, quiet gentle nature and his wonderful radiant smile. He will be missed.

The family will hold a private burial at a later date.
