1919 - 2013 LONGMEADOW, MA Irving Horowitz, 93, of 481 Laurel St., died on Feb. 15 at the Jewish Nursing Home in Longmeadow, surrounded by loving friends and the caring staff.
Born in New York City to Rose and Joseph Horowitz, the family moved to Fall River where Irving attended Durfee High School. Irving received an engineering degree from the University of Rhode Island and completed his ROTC in Newport, RI. Upon graduation, Irving joined the Army Air Corps and at the onset of World War II Irving was assigned to Europe. Prior to transfer, he married Marcelle June Horowitz in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was his beloved wife until her passing in 2004.
After serving in Great Britain, North Africa, the Middle East and Italy, Irving retired from the military with the rank of Captain. He celebrated Passover in Jerusalem at the height of the War. After the War, Irving joined the Bellefonte Corporation in Southbridge MA, as Director of Engineering. He then joined the Amerbelle Corporation in Vernon, CT rising to positions of Senior Vice President and Board Member. In 1999 he joined Amerbelle Textiles as Director of Engineering, retiring in 2008 at the age of 89, after a long and distinguished career in the technical textiles industry.
Irving was an avid outdoor enthusiast enjoying alpine skiing and golf. He was a member of Crestview Country Club for many years. He traveled extensively with Marcelle and friends to Europe, Israel, Asia, and the Caribbean.
Irving was a member of Sinai Temple in Springfield and the Jewish Community Center in Springfield. He was a consistent contributor to Jewish organizations and philanthropies. He enjoyed time with family and many friends. He was known for his warmth, sincerity, wisdom and kindness.
Irving moved to Longmeadow in 1956 where he and Marcelle raised two children, Daniel and William. He is survived by William; his brother, Herbert Horowitz of Sarasota FL; his sister, Helen Hurwitz of Silver Spring, MD; his granddaughters, Jessica and Allison; great-grandchildren Jonathon and Lillian, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. His presence will be both honored and missed by many.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be 12 PM Wednesday, February 20th at Sinai Temple, 1100 Dickinson St., Springfield, with burial in Sinai Memorial Park. Shiva will be at 481 Laurel St., Longmeadow, Wednesday and Thursday with evening services at 7 PM.
