Phyllis Lyon Borrowman Laundon Gibson
1922-2012 Phyllis Lyon Borrowman Laundon Gibson, 90, passed away peacefully in her Manchester, VT home on October 25th.
Born in Dayton, Ohio in 1922 to Army Air Corps pilot Alfred Lyon and Marjorie Adair Lyon, Phyllis spent many of her childhood years in Moscow, Idaho with her Adair family relatives coming east to attend Stuart Hall Preparatory School in Staunton, Virginia. For college, she attended the University of Idaho and George Washington University and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Art History. While in Washington, DC she worked at the Corcoran Art Gallery, helped organize events for WW II veterans and later became a stewardess for American Airlines. In 1949, she moved to Connecticut with her husband George Borrowman where she was actively involved in the Westport Garden Club, Silver Mine Art School, Norwalk Hospital Auxiliary and DAR while operating the private Nursery School she founded.
Although Phyllis lived and traveled worldwide, she chose Vermont as her home. From her summers in Landgrove beginning in 1950, to making it her principal residence in the 60's, much of her time has been spent involved in community activities and organizations including Green Mountain Gardeners, Mountain Valley Medical Clinic, The Weston Antiques Show, and Wantastiquet Trout Club.
Phyllis was a multi-talented individual and continued her appreciation of creativity and the fine arts her entire life and - painting, sculpting, flower arranging and making beaded jewelry. Her creativity was not limited to the arts, but many other endeavors as well. She had a knack for remodeling houses - both as a hobby and as an investment - from miniature houses and stores for grandchildren, to villas in Malta, Nevis and southern Spain to designing her home in Landgrove.
She will be remembered by her many friends and family for her infectious enthusiasm, compassion and generosity.
She is predeceased by her brother William A. Lyon, her loving husbands George "Scotty" Borrowman and M.H. "Bill" Laundon. and She will be missed by her many friends and family including daughters Ann Lyon Borrowman Fujii, husband Nobushi of Weston, VT and children Mayo and Gehn; Kelly Borrowman Slobodian her husband Paul of New Bern, NC and their sons Alexander (and his wife Genevieve) Adam and Scott.
