Ruth Connors Smith Apple Obituary
Ruth Connors Smith Apple died peacefully on July 24, 2018 in Manchester, VT at the age of 94. She was born May 25, 1924 at the family farm in North Dorset, VT to Patrick and Gertrude (George) Connors.

Ruth received her education at the one-room schoolhouse in North Dorset, Burr and Burton Seminary and Mt. Saint Joseph School, and later, Rutland Business College. During World War II, Ruth worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" at an aircraft factory in Connecticut. After the war, she and two girlfriends traveled the USA in a 1938 Chevrolet convertible, stopping to work when they ran out of money, and generally having the time of their lives. They ended up in Florida where Ruth worked at the famous Cap's place, where she waitressed and taught tennis. She went on to work at the Hillsboro Club in Florida during the winters and the Ekwanok in Manchester in the summers for many years. She met her future husband Thomas Smith Jr. in Florida and they were married in 1951 and had one son, Thomas, living between Florida and Vermont. She later divorced and moved to Vermont permanently, where she built and ran the Emerald Lake Motel for many years, as well as the concession stand at Emerald Lake. In 1984, Ruth sold the motel and moved to Florida where she was an LPN and caretaker for elderly folks. She reconnected with and married an old friend, Farrell Apple, and they were together for many years until his passing. When her health began to fail, Ruth moved back to Vermont. Ruth was an independent woman and extremely hard worker, with a kind heart and a great sense of humor.

Ruth is survived by her son Thomas and wife Ann of Manchester, brother Alfred and wife Gara of Castleton, grandchildren Joshua, Jason, Molly, and Samantha Smith, great grandchildren Skylar and Bodie Smith, Sadie Smith, and Logan Leach. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Her niece Norma Will was especially kind and caring to her in her last years. Nephew Michael Connors gave much support and help to the family. Ruth was predeceased by her brothers Paul, Martin, Robert, George and sister Gertrude.

At Ruth's request, there will be no service. Guestbook condolences may be made at www.maharandsonfuneralhome.net
