EAST DORSET - Robert Fulton Leonard died Monday evening January 21, 2013. He died peacefully at home in East Dorset, Vt., lovingly attended by Ven. Konchog Norbu. He was 69 years old.
He was predeceased by his first wife Patricia Ann Oberst.
Bob was born October 27, 1943 in West Orange, N.J. to Robert Fulton Leonard Sr. and Elizabeth Mahone. He graduated from St. Benedict's Preparatory in Newark, N.J. He attended Manhattan College and graduated from Rutger's University, with a degree in accounting. For many years he worked for NYNEX Corporation as the Benefits Director, but he found his true occupation as a high school history teacher in Yonkers, after earning his master's degree from SUNY New Paltz. He loved working with kids and coached softball and soccer for many years. In 2005, he retired to southern Vermont to walk the mountains and live quietly. He loved the outdoors and was a member of Transition Town Manchester.
He is survived by his wife Sally Asbury Leonard of East Dorset, Vt.; his children Jaimie Elizabeth Leonard, a major with the U.S. Military, presently on tour in Afghanistan; Elizabeth Anne Harman and husband J.R. Harman of Putnam Valley, N.Y.; Hannah J. Rudy Shores and husband Travis Shores of Lebanon, N.H.; Allyson Paige Basha and husband Mohammed Basha of South Burlington, Vt.; Samantha Leonard, a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer serving in Grenada; and Robert Sean Leonard of East Dorset, Vt. He is also survived by his five grandchildren Theo, Ava, Leah, Fionna, and Nina.
Bob practiced Buddhism for many years as a student of Roshi Daido Loori of Zen Mountain Monastery in Woodstock, N.Y. and Anyen Rinpoche of Orgyen Khamdroling Center in Denver, Colo.
Bob dearly loved his family, telling stories of his wife, children, and grandchildren at any opportunity. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered. May his journey be peaceful.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 26 at 2 p.m. at the Shambhala Center in Manchester, Vt..
