1925-2013Retired International Insurance Executive Dies

Thomas Hauff, retired leading international insurance manager, died at his home near Charlottesville, Va., of acute myeloid leukemia on January 20, 2013.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Sharon (Sherry) Newcomb Hauff, his brother Edmund and sister-in-law Harriet Hauff, his step children Peter Achenbach and Annis Achenbach Leslie and their children and their spouses.

Additional close family survivors include Tom's Goodrum god children and nieces, Jeanette Goodrum Marshall, Leslie Goodrum, Tanya Goodrum Morser,including their mother Sonia Goodrum and Aunt Jeanette Clarke.

He was born April 15,1925 in Allentown, Pa.

Following graduation from Allentown, High School, he attended Colgate University and received his B.A. degree in 1948. At Colgate he was on the Varsity swim team for four years, captain in his junior year, president of the Dolphin Club and a member of Theta Chi fraternity.

Tom began what became an outstanding insurance career with a local agency at a $35 weekly salary in 1948. In 1950 he joined AFIA (American Foreign Insurance Association) a consortium of leading American property, casualty, and marine insurance companies for service abroad.After additional training at the Maryland Casualty and Hartford Insurance Schools, he was assigned to Tokyo, Japan as assistant manager in 1951.He then moved to Okinawa to establish a new branch operation,also the construction of offices and residences for staff foreign and local.

Tom later saw assignments in Brazil, Africa (Kenya, Egypt) and Lebanon as the Eastern Mediterranean control office for the Arab World, Pakistan and Africa. Insurance joint ventures at this time were formed in Libya, Turkey, and South Africa.

In 1972 he returned to the US Headquarters and was elected Vice President for all Pacific operations including Australasia. Then to London in 1978 to manage the important United Kingdom and Ireland business.

When Cigna Corporation purchased AFIA in 1984, he was one of the first three confirmed in their posts and sent to Japan as Senior Vice President for the entire Pacific region, including South East Asia and Australia/New Zealand.

Tom formed and served as director of a number of new companies. Some of which were: AFIA Finance Corp.,Delaware, AFIA S.A.L., Beruit, Lebanon, Atlantic Sigorta, Istanbul, Turkey, Sahara Insurance Company. Tripoli, Libya, Aetna South Africa Ltd., Johannesburg, S.A., Centerquest Ltd., London, U.K. Blackthorn,U.K.London, U.K., Ins. Co. of North America, Sydney, Australia, and Cigna Worldwide N.Z. Ltd., Wellington, New Zealand.

After 35 years of service, he finally decided to retire in 1986 and moved to Vermont. In 1994 he and Sherry moved to Charlottesville, Va., where he continued to indulge his love for family, horses, dogs and golf.
