Lula Matney Obituary

Lula Ann Matney

MANSFIELD: The last four years had not been very kind to Lula Matney. Yet through life's valleys and illnesses, she fought the good fight, she finished the race, she kept the faith (2 Tim 4:7). Time after time she fought for life and rebounded.

Her "race" finished Monday morning October 8, 2012 as she passed to be with the Lord from MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. She was 76.

Born Lula Ann Harvey on April 3, 1936 in Ethel, WV, to James and Mae Iva (Legg) Harvey, Lula came to Mansfield at the age of 16 in search of work. She remained a lifelong Mansfield area resident, working 17 years as an assembler with Therm-O-Disc.

Lula took great pride in her home, in her family, and keeping both clean. Her personal style insisted on taking care of others first "taking care of you, feeding you, nursing you back to health..." Lula understood that everything had a place, and her place was found in loving and caring for her family.

Remembered as a woman of generosity, Lula was content to sit on her porch, watch the hummingbirds and bunnies, or dote on her dog Lucy. She was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles #336.

She is survived by her husband Robert Matney, whom she married October 18, 1958; their daughters Barbara (Dave Hilliard) King, Cheryl (Steve) Schroeder and Brenda (Martin) Shone all of Mansfield; a sister she raised as her daughter Sue (Dean) White of Mansfield; grandchildren Jeremy King , Vanessa (Wesley Stumbo) King-Stumbo, Amanda Schroeder, Aaron Shone, John Shone, and Matthew Shone all of Mansfield, Susan (Todd) Thompson of Bellville and Billy White of Mansfield; great grandchildren Mason King and Kameron Stumbo; brothers James Harvey of Las Vegas, NV, Jack Harvey of South Carolina and Thomas (Cheryl) Harvey of Mansfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Mary Cantley.

The Matney family will receive friends Thursday, October 11, 2012 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where her funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. Pastor Tony Pingitore will officiate. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions to Washington Township Rescue Squad may be made at the funeral home.
