Philip R. Cooper

MANSFIELD: Philip R. Cooper, 91, of Mansfield, died Saturday, January 4, 2014 at The Waterford, Mansfield, Ohio. Born April 18, 1922 in Chardon, Ohio, he was the son of Ralph and Marie (Schwab) Cooper.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving with the 37th Division and the United States Navy, having traveled the world during his enlistment. Philip retired from General Motors after 35 years of service and was an avid supporter of the Democratic Party and Social Justice. He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. He enjoyed watching all sports, wildlife, hiking, deer and birds, nature and could name every tree, animal track and bird. He also enjoyed spending time at the AMVETS. A kind and loving man, he would do anything for anyone and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his son, Steven Cooper of Mansfield; nephews, Richard Cooper of Pennsylvania, Milton Cooper of Eagle Creek, Alaska and Melvin Smith of Farmville, Virginia; and a niece, Joycelyn Barnard of Chesapeake, Virginia. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vera I. (Light) Cooper; brother, Marion Cooper; and sister, Ruth Cooper.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 12, 2014 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington Springmill Rd., Ontario conducted by Pastor Dallas Waggle. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m., at the funeral home on Sunday. Full military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ohio Bird Sanctuary, 3774 Orweiler Road, Mansfield, Ohio 44903.

I thank Steven Cooper for pointing out that I wrote "endemic" rather than emblematic which is what I meant. That's what you get when you rely too much upon spellcheck. Peace to dear Phil.

My deepest sympathy to Steven Cooper and his extended family for their loss. Mr. Cooper was endemic of the best mid-western American values through and through. A pillar in his community and beloved by his late wife Vera Cooper (née Light) and his son Steven. I know he will be sorely missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in God's grace, mercy and peace.
