R. Donald Grove
SHELBY: R. Donald Grove, age 86, resident of Shelby, died Thursday, March 21, 2013 in Magnolia Terrace Nursing Home, Galion, following declining health.
Born July 9, 1926 in Auburn Twp., Crawford County to James R. and Anna (Donnenwirth) Grove he had been a Shelby area resident most of his life. A 1944 graduate of Tiro High School, he was a member of the FFA, receiving his State Farmer Degree. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during WWII in the 511th Parachute Infantry.
Don was a farmer and worked for several companies in the Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) business retiring in 1996.
A member of the First Baptist Church, he was a member of the former Auburn Baptist Church where he was an adult Sunday School teacher, church moderator and superintendent. He also served on a mission trip to Haiti, a trip he thoroughly enjoyed.
He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Auburn Grange, New Washington American Legion, and a 50+ year member of the Gideon's International. A man with a great sense of humor, Don enjoyed entertaining people with his wit and wisdom and was quite the gadget maker, too. He liked traveling, eating out and especially enjoyed following his grandchildren's activities.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce (Raudabaugh) Grove, whom he married December 15, 1946; his children, Richard "Rick" (Myra) Grove of Newark, Susan Geissman (Greg Tidd) of Galion; and John Grove (Megan Reiners) of Ontario; seven grandchildren, Eric and Krista Grove, Brenda (Shawn) Stockmaster, Brad (Michelle) Geissman, Brian (Kristi) Geissman, Karen (John) VanVleet and James "Jim" (Lisa) Grove; eleven great grandchildren, Abby, Lydia, Brette, Luke, Grace, Molly, Graham, Casey, Elliot, Lauren and David; his extended family, Bob (Connie) Geissman and Debby Grove and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Brett Geissman.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, March 25, 2013 at the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby. Reverend Walter Keib will officiate with interment in Tiro Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Memorial expressions may be made to Gideon's International, Mansfield North Camp, P.O. Box 2183, Mansfield, OH 44905.
