Wert, David
David A. Wert MOUNT GILEAD: David A. "Farmer" Wert, age 83, of Mount Gilead, passed away Sunday afternoon, August 30, 2015 at the Morrow Manor Nursing Center in Chesterville. On March 30, 1932, David was born in Cleveland, OH, the son of the late William Daniel and Mary Irene (Toth) Wert. He graduated from Auburn Center High School in Geauga Co., Class of 1951. One day while pulling a load of hay with the tractor, David was run off the road by a car driven by a young woman, Barbara Ann Craig. They soon started dating and were married in Chagrin Falls, OH, on July 19, 1952. They have shared the last 63 wonderful years together, raising six children along the way. David spent his entire life working as a farmer. As a young man in Geauga Co., he operated a beef business and dairy farm. He sold that business when he and Barbara moved to Mount Gilead in 1961, where he has been a dairy and grain farmer ever since. David was also a fork lift operator for General Motors in Ontario for 30 years, retiring in 1994. In his early years David enjoyed sawmill operation, collecting guns and shooting, and making maple syrup in his own sugar house. Throughout his life, he amassed quite a collection of antique tractors, track tractors and equipment. He loved attending antique tractor shows throughout the U.S. and was a member of the National Farmers Organization, National/International Tractor Club, and the Morrow County Antique Tractor & Equipment Association. Over the years David and Barbara attended the Mount Gilead Church of Christ. David was not one to take time off to do much for enjoyment, but he always set aside time for Labor Day festivities at his farm. His entire family would gather there and have a wonderful time together. David did not believe in idle time. There was always something he could be doing on the farm. He was a self-sufficient man and to say he was a hard worker would be an understatement. He was a wonderful provider for his family and instilled his great work ethic and values into all of them. David will be dearly missed by his wife, Barbara of Mount Gilead; six children: Timothy (Jane) Wert of Mansfield, Joan (Gary Simmons) Nigh of Lexington, Kathleen (Delmar) Eichorn of Lexington, David Todd (Marilyn) Wert of Mansfield, Robert (Janeen) Wert of Mount Gielad, Theodore "Ted" (Penni Jordan) Wert of Shelby; a former son-in-law, Jim Nigh of Galion; 13 grandchildren: Chelsea (Tim) Severino, Garret Nigh, Gary (Kate) Eichorn, Jennifer (Tim) Bachelder, Gregory (Jordan) Eichorn, MaryAmber (Jeremy) Hughes, Heidi (Dave) Scherpelz, Levi (Lindsey) Wert, Valerie (Mark) Frazier, Katelin (Levi) Miller, Allyson Wert, Kyle Wert, Scott Price; 16 great grandchildren and one on the way. The Wert family will greet friends from 4 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2015, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St, Mount Gielad. The family will also greet friends there from 10 - 11 a.m. on Friday, September 4, 2015. Services honoring his life will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. with Evangelist Gene Lilly officiating.
