Betty L. Griffith

SPARTA: Betty L. Griffith, age 86 of Sparta, died Wednesday morning March 5, 2014 at St Ann's Hospital in Westerville. She was born on April 28, 1927 in Marengo to the late Frank and Mabel (Rathburn) Strait.

She was a retired Registered Nurse for Centerburg Local Schools. She also assisted her husband Joe in the operation of the Red and White Grocery Store and the Sohio Service Station in Sparta. She was a member of the Sparta United Methodist Church and a 50 year member Women's Group of the Church. Former 4-H leader and Cub Scout Den Leader and a substitute teacher for 30 years.

Betty loved being with her family and was proud of all of their accomplishments. She was a warm and nurturing mother who's greatest accomplishments were being married 64 years and raising six children. Betty enjoyed crafts, painting, quilting, sewing, beading, music and reading. At age 5 she was tutoring another child in reading and at age 50 went back to school and earned her nursing degree. Betty and Joe enjoyed retirement together and spent 23 years wintering in Florida.

Survived by her children, Rita (John) Collins of Gainesville, GA., Beverly Griffith of Sparta, Barbara (Jerry) Crowl of Olive Green, Candi (Carl) Crisci of Chesterville, Brett (Valerie) of Loveland, Bart (Shelley) of Lexington; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter "Joe" Griffith on May 10, 2009; grandchild, Carmen Marie; brothers, George and Robert.

Friends may call Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral home, SR 3 at 61, Sunbury. Services will be Monday at the Sparta United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. with Rev. John Collins officiating. Interment will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery.
