Bonnie M. Lovelette Rooks
MANSFIELD: Bonnie M. Lovellette Rooks, 86, of Mansfield, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at her daughter Alesia's residence, following a brief illness. Her loved ones were by her side.
She was born on September 27, 1926, in Eldorado, IL, to Ernest B. and Mary M. Grimes Lovellette. She was an inspiration to many, still employed at AK Steel, where she started working at the age of 57, on the track gang. She also was employed at the Mansfield Tire and Rubber, and when they shut down, she got a job at Tappan. She also taught at the Mansfield Beauty School, had a bridal salon, and had a Medical Assistant Certificate, welding degree, and went to massage therapy school. Any time she was laid off from a job, she went to school to expand her resume, and received her GED at the age of 53. She was a member of the VFW
post 3494, and loved going there to talk and have coffee with her friends. She was also a member of the United Steel Workers Local Union 169, and a member of Women of Steel. She was the oldest steel working woman in Canada and the United States, and probably the world. She was mentioned in a book called "Choices" and has been featured in The News Journal, Associated Press, PM Magazine, Wall Street Journal, Cleveland Plain Dealer and Columbus Dispatch.
She was the loving mother of Jean (Dean) Wrasse and Alesia Rooks Litteral; grandmother of Sonya Zeigler, Carla Wrasse and Zach Litteral; Great-grandchildren, Christopher (Angel ) Richards, Kyle (Sarah) Richards and Colton Zeigler; and brother Glendell Lovellette.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her son Brent Rooks; her parents Earnest and Mary Lovellette; her brothers Bob and Bernie Lovellette; and her sister Lucille Baldwin.
Calling hours will be from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, LTD., 1106 Park Avenue East (St. Rt. 430E), Mansfield. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, March 11, 2013 at the funeral home, with calling hours beginning at 11: 00 p.m. with Pastor Gary Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Union Cemetery.
