SPOKANE, WA: Craig Birmelin, formerly of Mansfield, Ohio passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014 in Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, WA. He was 52.
He was born July 26, 1961 in Mansfield, and picked up a baseball bat at the age of seven. He never looked back. Craig excelled at sports of all types: golf, basketball, baseball softball…you name it—he played it! Athletics came so natural to him, he could hit under 50 on nine holes of a golf course - with a baseball bat! Craig was a 1980 graduate of Madison High School (where he played varsity basketball and baseball, and was named First Team Baseball All Cardinal Conference three years in a row) and went on to attend Malone University in Canton.
He worked as a private investigator and was himself a very private person, but everyone who got to know him just loved his vibrant personality. He was always the first to lend a hand and was especially fond of his niece Bryonna and nephew Brandon.
He attended Mansfield Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Craig is survived by his mother Nancy (Philipp) Riess of Berrien Springs, MI; his father Lew (Merry) Birmelin of Mansfield; two brothers Brad Birmelin of Mansfield and Bryan (LaRonda) Birmelin of Mansfield; step-siblings Harold (Tammi) Riess of Berrien Springs, MI, Paul (Anita) Riess of Traverse City, MI, Lora Riess of Berrien Springs, MI, Christine Riess of Berrien Springs, MI, Ginger (Matthew) Pelger of Greenfield, IN, and Kelly (Chet) Crowley of Mount Pleasant, SC; uncles Jerry (Rodge Hans) Windbigler, Terry (Nancy) Windbigler, and Dick (Melba) Windbigler all of Mansfield; and cousins, and extended family.
Friends may call Friday evening, May 30, 2014 from 4-7 pm in the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where calling hours will continue Saturday from 2-3 p.m. A memorial service honoring his life will immediately follow at 3 p.m. Pastor Wayne Castle will officiate and private interment will be in Lexington Cemetery.
