GALION: Delbert Moore, 90, of Galion, died Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Galion Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born March 13, 1922 in Mud Fork, W. Va., he was the son of the late Zeffie and Norma Lee (Queen) Moore. He was preceded in death on February 28, 2009 by his wife, Jean (Huff) Moore whom he married on August 31, 1946.
He was a Staff Sargent during World War II
with the United States Army
Air Corps and was a Prisoner of War in Japan for three and a half years and survived the Bataan Death March in the Philippines. After his discharge he returned to West Virginia eventually relocating to Ohio where he worked for General Motors
and then Republic Steel both in Cleveland. He later owned a Sunoco filling station in Chesapeake, Ohio then moved to Galion in 1970 and worked for the former Fleetwood Mobile Homes in Crestline and former North Electric in Galion where he was a painter, taking an early retirement.
Delbert was a life member of the V.F.W
. Post 4329, American Legion Scarbrough Post 243, AMVETS Post 1979 and the Army-Navy Garrison 987 all in Galion.
He is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Charles D. Moore and his companion, Nadine Lozier of Mansfield, Daniel E. and Sara Michelle Moore of Bucyrus, William Dean and Lisa Moore of Galion; one daughter, Debra "Debi" Moore of Galion; and six grandchildren, Charles Moore, Denise (Scott) Hornikel, Erin Grammer, Jaclyn Danielle Moore, Darcie Moore and William Derek Moore and fiancé' Tera Knopsnider; 13 great-grandchildren, Bryan Moore, Claudia Moore, Tiffani Hornikel, Ashley Hornikel, Jaron Grammer, Reba Grammer, Nora Grammer, Gavin Meizer, Zane Kincaid, Holden Davis, Austin Woodard, Donavan Moore and Brooklyn Blaising; and one sister, Lassa Hughes of Huntington, W. Va.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by one great-grandchild, Brittney Hornikle; three sisters, Arville Moore, Ruby Brogan and Verda Goodall; and one brother, Curtis Moore.
Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home in Galion where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, with Rev. Joe Stafford officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Gardens in Logan, W. Va.
Full military honors will be held by the United States Air Force and the Galion/Crestline area veterans organizations during the funeral service.
