Donald T. Niswander
MANSFIELD: Donald T. Niswander, 87, of Mansfield, died Tuesday morning, May 6, 2014 at Mifflin Care Center. He was born July 20, 1926 in Findlay, Ohio to the late Hildreth (Miller) and Roy Niswander. Don graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1944 and joined the U.S. Army
with the 7th Calvary Division. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant and was stationed in the Philippines during WWII
. He was a proud veteran and member of the American Legion Post #16, V.F.W
. and Moose Lodge #341.
Don never met a stranger and enjoyed expressing his opinions with others and providing them with their feedback. He was employed at Mansfield Tire and Rubber Co. for 37 years and later retired from Pepsi Cola Bottling Company. He was a passionate gardener as evidenced by his numerous vegetable and flower gardens. He was especially fond of watching the plants grow from seeds to maturity and was very generous in sharing the fruits of his labor.
Don was a die-hard Cleveland, OSU and Madison sports fan and bled green for the Rams. He was a faithful fan, often attending his granddaughters' softball games and watching his grandson coach. He managed the Rams football concession stand for 18 years. He and his wife, Barb, enjoyed playing Euchre and were members of many clubs throughout the years.
He is survived by three sons, Gregory Niswander and his significant other, Sharon Hoskins of Mansfield, Bruce Niswander of NY and Kim (Rachel) Niswander of Columbus; three grandchildren, Amy and Molly Niswander, both of Columbus and Tim (Dee) Niswander of Lucas; three great-granddaughters, Vicki, Meghan and Brooke; two brothers, Jerry (Pat) Niswander and Darrell (Nancy) Niswander; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Shirley Vogt and Willy Harper. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Barbara H. Mumper Niswander; brothers, Doug and Kent Niswander; and sister, Evelyn Greer.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and aides of the C Wing of Mifflin Care Center for their loving and kind care of Don.
Friends and family may visit from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, May 11, 2014 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. The funeral service will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home immediately followed by burial in Loudonville Cemetery. The Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will present military honors at the graveside.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Donald T. Niswander Memorial Athletic Scholarship for a deserving Madison athlete.
