Eugene L. "Red" Shaffer
JOHNSVILLE: Eugene L. "Red" Shaffer, age 90, of Johnsville, passed away Saturday afternoon, January 26, 2013 in Woodside Village Care Center in Mt. Gilead.
Born November 1, 1922 in Johnsville, to Lawrence and Fannie (Kochheiser) Shaffer, he was number seven of nine children, and was graduated from Johnsville High School in 1940.
One of America's Greatest Generation, Eugene served in the U.S. Army during World War II
A lifelong resident of Johnsville, upon returning from the war, Eugene didn't stray far from home, never leaving the state of Ohio until his 70's. He owned and operated his successful grave vault business, Modern Vault Company for many years.
A very talented woodworker, he and his brother Dick made many treasures for their nieces and nephews including doll cradles, step and folding stools and miscellaneous odds and ends. To be sure, Eugene never compromised the quality of his work, always using the finest hardwoods.
He enjoyed watching sports, especially football, though often Eugene was dozing in front of the television in his recliner. He personally coined the phrases "Whatchamacallit" or "Thingamagig" when the words or names escaped him.
Willing to "chat up anyone" Eugene was non-assuming with a genuine fondness for people.
He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law Richard and Margueritte Shaffer of Johnsville, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Eugene was preceded in death by brothers and sisters Maurice Shaffer, Robert Shaffer, Kathaleen Donelson, Elizabeth Gaffney, Waneta Wiseman, Virginia Trapp and Audrey Shaffer.
Friends may call Thursday, January 31, 2013 from 4-7 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where the funeral service will be held Friday at 11 am. Chaplain Dave Matos will officiate and burial with military honors will follow in Shauck Cemetery.
