Evelyn Marie Helfrich

MANSFIELD: Evelyn Marie Helfrich, 94, passed away April 8, 2014. Born January 20, 1920 in Marion, she was the daughter of David and Sally (Deckard) Shenefield.

Evelyn was a 1938 graduate from Crestline High School. In 2012, she was the oldest living Crestline Cheerleader and had donated her letter to the Crestline Shunk Museum. In 1962, Evelyn and Dick moved to Pennsylvania and returned to Mansfield in 1990. A devoted volunteer, she served as the Executive Secretary of The Red Cross in Crestline in the 50's, was a past volunteer for Fox Chase Cancer Research in PA, where she worked over 12,000 hours, and she also volunteered as a Gray Lady Aid for Crestline Hospital. Evelyn was a member of Ruth Circle at First English Lutheran Church. A true homemaker, she was a skilled seamstress. In her free time, she enjoyed oil painting birds and the scenery of Chester County, PA. Evelyn resided in Wedgewood Estates for 12 years.

Surviving are her son, David L. (Mary Ann) Helfrich of NJ; daughter, Carol A. Helfrich of PA; granddaughters, Angela Thomas, Jennifer DiMartino, Elizabeth Northeimer-Ehsani, and Katie Morrison; great grandchildren, Robert and Clayton Thomas, Nick and Arman Ehsani, and Evelyn Morrison; special niece, Sharon Payne; and brother-in-law, Jack Helfrich.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 70 years whom she married June 8, 1941, Dick Helfrich; and sisters, Frances King and Janet O'leary.

A graveside service, conducted by Pastor Diana Seaman and Pastor Joe Sprowl, will take place Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery in Crestline. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to OhioHealth MedCentral Hospice, 335 Glessner Ave., Mansfield, OH 44903.
