Howard M. Dudley
GALION: Howard M. Dudley, 92, of Galion, died Monday, January 21, 2013 at Galion Community Hospital after a brief illness.
Born December 11, 1920 in Morrow Co., he was the son of the late Charles W. Dudley and Lula (Clark) Dudley. He married Theresa M. "Terry" (Gerster) Dudley on October 23, 1955, who survives.
Howard was a graduate of Marengo High School in 1939, later going on to be co-owner of J & H Shoe Shoppe on the Square in Uptowne Galion for many years, retiring in 1986. Following that he worked 14 years in the shoe department at J.C. Penney Co., in Galion and Mansfield, retiring from the Richland Mall store in 2001.
A long-time and dedicated member of Galion Lions Club, Howard had 60 years perfect attendance. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Galion where he served as an Usher. As an Uptowne businessman he has been active in Galion Area Chamber of Commerce Retail Merchants, Galion Uptowne Associates and was a Charter Member of the Galion Community Center-YMCA Board of Directors.
As the perfectionist he was, Howard enjoyed working in his yard, which was always perfectly manicured. He was especially proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Whenever Howard was out and about he always found someone he knew and had something in common with to talk to. His conversations always included the weather, which he especially liked following and talking about.
His daily ritual always included a Dry Gin Martini, or two, or three, with a green olive, which he had those closest to him convinced contributed to his good health and longevity!
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by a daughter, Kimberly Furr of Pensacola, Fla.; two granddaughters, Monique (Jesse) Delaney of Bucyrus and Bianca (Mike Garrison) Furr of Galion; two grandsons, Mario Torres and Joey Smolko of Pensacola, Fla.; four great-grandchildren, Paige, Kaydance, Brooklyn and Kiley; and one brother and a sister-in-law, Paul and Marjorie Dudley of Las Vegas.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Vaughn, Wayne, Gerald, Edward and Robert Dudley and three sisters, Jean Osborne, Grace Baker and Virgie Hilton.
Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, January 25, 2013 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home in Galion followed by a memorial service at 6 p.m. Friday with Pastor Jerry Penrod officiating.
