James F. Maddy
CRESTLINE: James F. Maddy, 70, of Crestline, died Monday, May 26, 2014 at Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Jim was born in Crestline on May 5, 1944 to the late Hubert F. "Pete" and Mabel (Hotelling) Maddy. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Barbara L. Langford whom he married on December 19, 1970.
Jim was employed as a warehouse supervisor at Motor Coach Industries (formerly called Flxible Corp.) in Loudonville. He worked there for 29 years until his retirement on May 5, 2009. Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Navy
Reserve serving his country from 1965 - 1967 in Atsugi, Japan, during the Vietnam War
. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #859, the VFW
Post #2920, both of Crestline, and the American Legion in Loudonville. He spent a lot of time with the "Liar's Club" at McDonald's, of which he just may have been President. Jim was passionate about his garden and was well known in Crestline for sharing his garden produce in his front yard. For Jim, "if you can't eat it, it's not going in my garden". If Jim wasn't in his garden or out front helping a customer, he could be found in his workshop or in his chair relaxing. An "every man's handyman", Jim was always putting his talents to use by helping others. Ready with a joke or a story, Jim was always the first to tickle your funny bone. He delighted friends and family with his spontaneity and willingness to entertain in the most unconventional ways. He may be remembered as Candy John, the man portraying mother goose or for dressing as a woman to make people chuckle.
In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his two sons and daughter: Gregory Maddy of Marion, David and Jessica Maddy, of Mansfield, Kathryn and Josh Grassman, of Loudonville; his seven grandchildren whom he loved dearly and was very proud of: Jenna Maddy, Jacob Maddy, Caden Grassman, Jocelyn Grassman, Isabella Grassman, Alexander Maddy, Declan Maddy; his brother and sisters: Betty and Charlie Conn of Crestline, Marge Cook, of Crestline, Doris White, of Atascadero, CA, Virginia Nelson, of Crestline, June and Bill Paynter, Ooltewah, TN, Don and Ruth Maddy, of Wahkiacus, WA, Janet Maddy of Crestline, Marlene and Pat Volk of Galion, Patricia Maddy of Crestline, and Mary Pursley, of Crestline, numerous nieces and nephews; and Jim's best friend, Jon Eckert of Crestline.
