BELLVILLE: James Southward, 65, of Bellville, died Saturday, March 30, 2013 at MedCentral Mansfield. Born October 28, 1947 in Mansfield, he was the son of Marion and Helen (Holzmiller) Southward. James was currently the Richland County EMA Directors and was a member of FEMA and Disaster Response Team. He retired as a fire captain of the Mansfield Fire Department after 28 years and was one of the first advanced emergency medical technicians on the fire department. He received the Legion of Merit Award in 1983, Firefighter of the Year in 1990, EMT of the Year in 1997, and the Bronze Star
in 1993, 1994, and 2000. James also was a member of the Clearfork and Snowtrail ski patrol and was the outstanding national patroller in 1997 and received the purple and gold star from the National Ski Patrol. He was a bag piper and a member of the Royal Scott Highlanders. James was past president of the firefighter union, past member of the Bellville city council, and was a member of the American Legion and Vietnam War
Veterans. He had worked many years with the Miss Ohio Pagent and was the ambulance driver in Shawshank Redemption. In his free time, James loved fly fishing, golfing, horseback riding, skiing, and spending time with his grandkids.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Southward of Bellville; daughters, Lora (Steve) Gray of New Albany, LeAnn (Dave) Hogan of Washington, DC, Christine (Matthew) Roberts of Mansfield, and Joyce (Ryan) Kelly of Myrtle Beach; and grandchildren, Darrick and Hayden Gray, Bailey and Willow Roberts, Gavin Kelly, and Henry Hogan. He was preceded in death by his parents.
There will be no calling hours or services held at this time. Family services will be held at a later date in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross. Wappner Funeral Directors is privileged to serve the family of James Southward.
