Joe Davis, Jr..
MANSFIELD: Joe DAVIS JR., 83, crossed over quietly into the Lord's hands in the early morning hours on Thursday, June 6, 2013 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Davis was born on Saturday, December 28, 1929 to late Joseph and Mary Camak Davis Sr. in Blairs, South Carolina and had lived in the Mansfield community for the past 59 years. He was a member of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church, the American Legion Local 676 and the Local United Auto Workers 549. Joe was a veteran of the US Army
where he served during the Korean War
. He worked at Humphrey's and Empire Detroit Steel Mill in Mansfield, where he earned the nickname "Pig Iron", before going to General Motors
-Fisher Body in Ontario. Joe retired in 1989 after 32 years of service as a crane operator. He was an avid bowler for many years, bowling in the Upsetters and other leagues. Joe enjoyed going on trips to Las Vegas, NV, Detroit, MI and Wheeling, WV during his retirement years accompanied by his family and friends. He also enjoyed being with his family, attending family reunions and visiting home every year in South Carolina.
Joe is survived by 4 daughters Dorothy Coleman Euclid, Tracy Davis and Linda (Willie) Davis-Stormer both Mansfield, Winifred Davis Columbia, SC; a son Julian (Sandra) S. Davis Mansfield; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; 3 sisters Anne (David) Brent, Yvonne Davis and Evelyn (Robert) Thompson all Mansfield; 3 brothers Flanders "Blue" (Dorothy) Davis Mansfield, Lacosta' Davis of Las Vegas, Nevada and R. C. Spenser (Connie) Davis Covington, Georgia, an aunt: Lucille Thompson Columbia, South Carolina; 6 sister-in-laws: Earlene Coleman Blairs, South Carolina, Helen Davis Mansfield, Bessie Feaster Chester, South Carolina, Daisy Jackson East Orange, New Jersey, Nezzie McConnell Blairs, South Carolina, Margaret Coleman Cleveland; a brother-in-law: Jerome (Alice) Coleman Maple Heights; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife Bama Lee, brothers and sister-in-law Charles and Alphonzo (Freddie) Davis.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 12:00 noon in the Mount Calvary Baptist Church with Reverend Clifton Chandler officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in Mansfield Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to the building fund at Mount Calvary Baptist Church.
