Joseph W. Griffon

MANSFIELD: Joseph W. Griffon, 67, of Bellville, passed away unexpectedly at MedCentral Hospital in Mansfield, OH on Sunday, January 12, 2014. Mr. Griffon was retired from Armco Steel. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country during the Vietnam era.

Joseph was a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend. He was a gentle and generous soul who knew no strangers. Joe was always first to lend a hand to anyone in need and no one ever had to ask for his help. He never forgot anyone's birthday and made sure every family member received a gift for Christmas and other special occasions. He exemplified his strong faith in God by practicing the Golden Rule throughout his life.

Joe enjoyed dining out, meeting new people, and he loved a good joke. He frequently volunteered with church, civic, and veterans' organization in the area.

Joe is survived by three brothers and two sisters in-law, Virgil (Jerri) Shafer and their children, Roxan (Dale) Phillips, Roger Shafer, Rick Shafer, Robyn Shepherd, Eddie (Jodi) Shafer, and Shannon (John) Kelleher. Keith (Sandra) Shafer and their children, Melissa Watson, Heather (Snyder) Ugaldi, and Bryon (Tiffany) Shafer. Gene Yohe II and his son, Matthew Yohe. Joseph also leaves behind numerous great nieces and nephews along with his close friend, Richard Metcalf.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Griffon, and his mother and step-father, Glorene and Gene Yohe.

Family and friends are invited to call on Monday, January 20, 2014 from 12:30p.m. to 2:00p.m. at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. Funeral services will be held at 2:00p.m. at the funeral home. Military services conducted by the Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial Detail will be held at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the organization of the donor's choice.
