Kathleen R. "Katy" Shira Wickenrieder
MANSFIELD: Before six o'clock every morning, Katy Wickenrieder, had her Bible open, a daily devotional read, and spent time in prayer with the Lord. She felt that was the best way to start her day, and was a blessing to both her and her family. Katy was a woman of devout faith and prayer.
Katy went to be with the Lord late Friday evening December 20, 2013 in Hospice House in Ashland. She was 79.
Born Kathleen Ruth Shira March 1, 1934 in Mt. Vernon, she was the daughter of Royal & Velma (Fletcher) Shira. She was graduated from Fredericktown High School with the class of 1952, and on December 11, 1954 she married the love of her life Kurt Wickenrieder.
In 1957 they moved to Mansfield, where Kurt had taken a job in the GM plant, and Katy set about the noble task of homemaking and raising two daughters.
Once the girls were raised, she took a position with Essex Wire Co., and then hired in as one of the Hire family's very first employees - working from their garage - with Hi-Stat Manufacturing. She retired from Hi-Stat in 1996 with more than 20 years of service.
She had a penchant for puzzles and crocheting and had a marvelous green thumb "she could grow anything!" Her cooking—especially German potato dumplings and Thanksgiving-style turkey and dressing—were much anticipated by her family and friends.
Katy was a faithful member of Diamond Hills Baptist Church where she had served the congregation as deaconess and assistant financial secretary. She was also active with the church's many programs including: Circle of Concern, Young At Heart, Knit Two-gether Ministry, and was always active with a Sunday school class.
In addition to her daily devotions, Katy loved to read and always had an inspirational or Christian living book in her hands. Katy's heart was full of love for her family and dearly loved her grandchildren, great-granddaughter and church family. Katy focused on being a blessing, and God returned those blessings to her in abundance.
She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years Kurt E. Wickenrieder; her daughter Becky Hardin of Mansfield; grandchildren Jacob Hardin and Alison Hardin both of Mansfield; a great-granddaughter Mia Rosemarie Hardin; siblings Ralph & Doris Shira, Dean & Linda Shira, and Janet & Wayland Stricker all of Fredericktown; sisters-in-law Phyllis Shira of Fredericktown and Crysta Wickenrieder of Galion; numerous nieces and nephews; and her devoted church family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter Rose Marie Wickenrieder in 1995; brothers Wayne, Gerald, Donald, and Roger Shira; and sisters Jeanne Lightner, Adah Carothers, and Joyce Crawford.
The family will receive friends 3-7 p.m. Thursday, December 26, 2013 in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. A worship service celebrating her life will be held 10 a.m. Friday in Diamond Hills Baptist Church, 647 S. Diamond St., Mansfield with Pastors Chris Thomas and Don Holtzapple officiating. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery.
