Lew Wallace Friend, Sr.
GALION: Lew Wallace Friend, Sr., 92, of Galion, passed away Saturday, October 6, 2012 while in the care of Mill Creek in Galion.
Lew was born August 14, 1920 in Pike County, Kentucky to the late James Pembrook and Clarissa (Mullins) Friend. He proudly served his country during World War II
and was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict
, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in the U. S. Navy in 1972. He later retired as a service manager at Galion Iron Works in 1986. Lew was a graduate of the University of Kentucky, having received double Bachelor Degrees. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Galion, where he served as a deacon. Lew played Duplicate Bridge and was active in men's bridge groups in Mansfield and Galion for more than 20 years. Lew was an exceptional athlete having played baseball for the University of Kentucky and semi-pro. All of his life, he was a big sports fan, having coached basketball in the Navy, coached youth basketball in Galion, and previously served as President of the Galion Little League.
Lew is survived by five children, Patricia (Dan) Everly of Galion, Gigi Friend of Hanahan, South Carolina, Lew (Sheila) Friend, Jr. of Mansfield, Jennifer Friend Downs of Galion, Russell (Holly) Friend of Alliance; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; two siblings, Evelyn Newsom of Danville, Kentucky, and Ballard Friend of Duluth, Georgia; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Lew was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Porter Friend; one son, Richard Friend; and four brothers, Noah Friend, Woodrow Friend, Sr., Bruce Friend, and Kelsey Friend.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church, 240 S. Market Street, Galion, with military honors performed by the Galion/Crestline Joint Veterans Organizations at 3:45 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 12, 2012 at J. W. Call & Son Funeral Home in Pikeville, Kentucky, with calling one hour prior. Burial will follow in Friend Family Cemetery in Pikeville, Kentucky.
