Marilyn Hampel Rhodes
MANSFIELD: Marilyn Hampel Rhodes, 80, of Mansfield, died after an extended illness on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at Rae Ann Garden Gate, Cleveland, with family at her side.
Marilyn was born December 24, 1932 in St. Louis, MO to Emil J. and Lillian (Broz) Mateker. After graduating from Notre Dame High School, Marilyn worked as an elementary school teacher
Marilyn married Richard J. Hampel and while raising their 6 children they moved to Trenton, NJ, Rolla, MO, San Bernadino, CA, Mansfield, OH and then to Caledonia, NY and back to Mansfield. Life was kept busy with the kid's activities such as athletics, horse shows, 4-H and then gardening at home. As her kids grew into adults and had kids of their own she attended ballet, music, gymnastic, swimming, graduation events. Then for her adult kids she was at every marathon and half marathon. She was their biggest supporter!
Marilyn was a homemaker for many years and went back to school to become an LPN while her kids were still home. She was very artistic and enjoyed painting, needlepoint, counted cross stitch and playing the organ and piano. Puzzles were her last activity and if the pieces didn't fit, she cut them so they would!
She was a member of Resurrection Parish, an active bowler at Village and later Lex Lanes and was a former organist for Resurrection Parish. Marilyn was an LPN and later a volunteer at Mansfield General/Med Central for many years.
Marilyn is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Leslie and Dr. Steven Milleson of Ironton, daughter Gweynn Hampel and partner, Peg Liberatore of Lakewood, son and daughter-in-law Jeffrey and Brenda Hampel of Columbus, daughter Laurie Mancuso of LeRoy, NY, daughter and son-in-law Sally and Michael Boylan of Caledonia, NY, daughter and son-in-law Terry and Ron Sautter of Mansfield; grandchildren Dr. Niki Milleson (Jeremy Larsen), Dr. Patrick Milleson (Emily), Tim, Alexandria and Jordan Hampel, Christina and Matthew Mancuso, Nathan (Kiera) Boylan and Emily Boylan, Hailee and Derek Sautter; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Buck and Lolita Mateker of Houston, TX, Charlie and Carole Mateker of St. Louis , MO, and sister Shirley Gilson of Indianapolis , IN.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband Richard Hampel, second husband Ralph Rhodes, stepmother Thelma Robbe, and brother-in-law Mike Gilson.
The Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home is serving Marilyn's family.
Funeral mass in honor of Marilyn's life will be held at Resurrection Parish on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 10:30 am. The Very Rev. Father Nelson Beaver will officiate, and graveside services will follow in Oak Grove Memorial Park.
