Mary Eileen DeGreve

CRESTLINE: Mary Eileen DeGreve, 95, of 608 West Bucyrus St., Crestline, died Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Galion Community Hospital, Galion, after a short illness. She was recently a resident of Crestline Nursing Center, where she was very content with the excellent care.

Eileen was born in Auburn Center on November 15, 1917 to the late Roy "Dusty" and Erma (Sheckler) Rhodes. She married Thomas C. DeGreve at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Crestline on June 3, 1935 and he preceded her in death on May 19, 1982.

Eileen graduated from Crestline High School in 1935. She was a nurses' aid at Crestline Memorial Hospital for twenty years until her retirement in 1977. She treasured her friendship with her wonderful hospital friends for many years. Eileen was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Crestline and also a member of the "Birthday Club" in Crestline. Eileen loved spending time with her greatest joy - her family. Her family will always remember her as the best cookie maker and named her, "Eileen - The Cookie Queen". During World War II, she was active as a canteen worker serving the troop trains that went through Crestline. Eileen also enjoyed word puzzles, crafts, needlework and especially crocheting. She has crocheted over 200 beautiful afghans for friends and family over the years.

She is survived by her two sons and two daughters, Stan (Carolyn) DeGreve, Austin, TX, Elaine Klopfenstein, Crestline, Molly Witcher, Billings, MT, David (Diana) DeGreve, Crestline, nine grandchildren; Lynne, Tom, Bill, Ross, Andrea, Laura, Emily, Amy, Daniel, and seventeen great-grandchildren, two sisters, Alice Hunt, Fort Meyers, FL, Peggy (Walter) Taylor, Bucyrus, numerous nieces and nephews, and friends whom she worked with at the hospital.

She was preceded in death by her three brothers and two sisters: Dorothy Plyler, Homer Rhodes, Harry Rhodes, Howard Rhodes, Emma Jean Rutter, and two sons-in-law, William Klopfenstein and William Witcher.

The family will receive friends Thursday, January 24, 2013 from 10-11 AM at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Crestline. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 24 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Crestline, with Rev. Michael A. Geiger, Celebrant. Burial will follow in Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Crestline.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church in care of the funeral home.
