MANSFIELD: Nathaniel Davis, 86, of Mansfield, died Thursday, November 8, 2012 at his home after an extended illness. Known as "Uncle Nate" by family and friends alike, he was born on May 4, 1926 in Rich, MS to the late Sersha and Minnie (Hudson) Davis. Nathaniel was united in marriage to Lela Strain-Petty on October 23, 1948 and remained so until her death on May 21, 1997. To this union four daughters were born. He accepted Christ at a young age and was a Baptist in the Mississippi River. Before health issues, Nathaniel enjoyed fishing. He worked at Empire Detroit Steel Mill for 39 ½ years of service.
Nathaniel was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Dorothy L. Davis; and four brothers, James Davis, Samuel Davis, Lenzy Davis, and Cornell Davis. He leaves to cherish his memories his children, Tommie (Dorothy) Carter of Mansfield, Gloria (William) Lane of Mansfield, Emily (Rick) Pender of Columbus, Annie Davis of Mansfield, and Paris Couley of Mansfield; 11 grandchildren; over 20 great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; brother, Cenell Davis of Dodge, MN; sister, Theresa (Bobby) Hunter of Mansfield; sisters-in-law, Dell Davis of Elkhard, IN and Mae Moore of Mansfield; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family.
A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. at the Diamond St. Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. Friends may call one hour prior to the service from 11:00-12:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Tommie Carter, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
