Nellie B. Johnston
MANSFIELD: Nellie B. Johnston, 92, of Mansfield, passed away early Thursday morning, March 20, 2014 at Liberty Nursing Center in Mansfield. She was born October 8, 1921 in Mt. Gilead, Ohio to the late Grady and Flora E. (Smith) Smotherman.
She retired from United Telephone Company and was loved by all who knew her. Nellie enjoyed gardening, both vegetable and flower, and especially enjoyed her rose garden. She was an accomplished seamstress and loved cooking, baking and canning. Her family was most important to her, especially her grandchildren. She was an active lady all her life and enjoyed camping. Nellie was a member of Caesarea Baptist Church and a longtime leader in the Pioneer Girls program.
She is survived by four daughters, Charlotte (Larry) Davenport of MI, Carolyn Rice of NJ, Esther (Edward) Glenn of Mansfield and Ruth Johnston of AZ; foster son, James Jacobs of Columbus; eight grandchildren, Vicky (Rob) Schweikhart, Valerie (Dave) Malaney, Sarah Rice, Benjamin (Erica) Rice, Matthew Rice, Rachel Wolfgang, Deborah (Brian) Roub and Eddie Glenn, Jr.; eight great-grandchildren; four sisters, Harriett Shellhaas and Marjorie Smotherman, both of Mansfield, Eudie (Wally) Schmidt of AZ and Virginia Smotherman of CA; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clair T. Johnston and son, David Rice.
