Richard L. "Dick" Spore
MANSFIELD: Richard L. "Dick" Spore, 68, of Mansfield, died Sunday, July 21, 2013 at Mill Creek Nursing Home in Galion following a two year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born August 21, 1944 in Crestline, Ohio he was the son of Harry R. and Doris Mae (Baldinger) Spore. He was actively involved in the theatre all his life, both movies and live stage. He was a 44 year member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees - IATSE and was a projectionist at almost every drive-in and indoor theatre in the Richland/Ashland/Crawford County area from 1968-2013. He formed and operated "Accent Lighting & Sound Company" with his wife Nelda. He did sound and lighting services for concerts, festivals and school productions in the area and also for the Miss Ohio Pageant for many years. He was actively involved with the formation of the Renaissance Theatre. He worked on the board of directors when it was first housed in the Old Madison Theatre and then moved to the Ohio Theatre and renamed to the Renaissance Theatre. He was past president of the board of directors of the Galion Community Theatre and was president when Galion Community Theatre bought its present home on Harding Way West in Galion. He worked many stage productions at Playhouse Square and at Quicken Arena in Cleveland. Most recently, he was the manager/operator of the Sunset Drive-In Theatre from 2000 until his illness forced him out this season. When Dick was not involved in some kind of theatre, he enjoyed woodworking and was also a Mr. Fixit.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Nelda (Dent) Spore; two nephews, Robert W. Spore of Ellicot City, MD and Sean Donnelly; a sister-in-law, Catherine Spore; and several cousins.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2013 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road, Ontario. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2013 at the funeral home conducted by Deacon Alfred Sisson. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
