Father Robert Lewis Haas
GALION: Father Robert Lewis Haas, 76, of Galion, died Monday, July 22, 2013 at Mill Creek Nursing Center in Galion.
Born August 10, 1936 in Galion, he was the son of the late Joseph M. and Lucille E. (Ruth) Haas.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Galion. After graduating from Galion High School in 1952, he attended Our Lady of the Lake Seminary in Wawasee, Ind., Mount Saint Mary's Seminary and Xavier University, both in Cincinnati and Fordham University in New York City. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1962. He served as diocesan associate director and diocesan director of Toledo Catholic Charities for 16 years. He then served as pastor of Good Shepard Parish in Toledo, Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in New London and St. Mary's in Wakeman for a total of 23 years.
He retired from being a pastor in 2006 and returned to Galion and became active again as a volunteer chaplain at Richland County Correctional Institution in Mansfield. He also continued leading mission groups to Belize to rehab schools and to Tanzania to teach in Queen of Apostles Seminary in Ushirombo. He wrote two books: The Current History of the Catholic Church and a children's book, Max The Market Mouse.
He is survived by two brothers, Eugene Haas of Galion and Richard (Patricia) Haas of Cincinnati; two sisters, Ruth Ann Friel of Galion and Barbara (William) Burkhart of Galion; one sister-in-law Phyllis Haas of Florida and many nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Haas and David Haas; and one sister-in-law, Josephine Haas.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2013 and from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 25, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 135 N. Liberty Street, Galion, Ohio 44833. An Evening Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, after calling hours at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father John Miller presiding. Bishop Leonard T. Blair will be main celebrant for the 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery after the funeral luncheon provided by the family and the parish.
