Robert E. Matney
MANSFIELD: Robert E. Matney, 76, of Mansfield passed away Monday September 9, 2013 in Riverside Methodist Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
The son of Edgar and Grace (Weikel) Matney, Bob was born in Adrian, Michigan on January 18, 1937.
As a boy, Bob's family moved to Mansfield. In 1954, Bob joined the Navy and was later honorably discharged.
While cruising the city streets of Mansfield, Bob first met his future wife, Lula Harvey downtown at the square. On October 18, 1958 the two were married.
Bob loved tinkering on his John Deere tractor and for the last few years showed it in the Bellville Street Fair. An outdoors kind of guy, Bob hunted and enjoyed eating fresh perch from Lake Erie. Bob cheered for the Cleveland Browns, Ohio State Buckeyes, and followed NASCAR. Having a soft spot for animals, Bob adored his pet Dachshund, Lucy
Life was black or white with Bob, not afraid to speak his mind, he was ready to share his opinion. He will be remembered for a louder than life laugh that was one of a kind.
He is survived by his daughters Barbara (Dave Hilliard) King, Cheryl (Steve) Schroeder and Brenda (Martin) Shone all of Mansfield; a sister-in-law he raised as his daughter Sue (Dean) White of Mansfield; grandchildren Jeremy King, Vanessa (Wesley Stumbo) King-Stumbo, Amanda Schroeder, Aaron Shone, John Shone, and Matthew Shone all of Mansfield, Susan (Todd) Thompson of Bellville and Billy White of Mansfield; great grandchildren Mason King and Kameron Stumbo; brothers-in-law James Harvey of Las Vegas, Jack Harvey of South Carolina and Thomas (Cheryl) Harvey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters Evelyn Woodard, Eunice Anderson and Viola Ruhl.
Family will receive friends Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where his funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. Pastor Tony Pingitore will officiate. Burial with military honors performed by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
