Samuel E. (Sam) Judson

MANSFIELD: Samuel E. (Sam) Judson died Tuesday afternoon, January 28, 2014 at his home in Mansfield. He was born on February 14, 1942 in Ravenna to George Harley and E. Elizabeth (Swigart) Judson. At the age of 18 months he moved with his family to Austinburg.

He graduated from Austinburg High School in 1960, attended The Ohio State University and served in the U.S. Army, from which he was honorably discharged in 1963. He married Christine Burr of Jefferson in 1968, at St. Joseph Calasanctius Parish in Jefferson. He was employed at Rockwell Brake Plant in Ashtabula from 1964 to 1986. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union.

He operated the family dairy farm from 1987 to 1999. He was a member of the Ashtabula County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Ohio Farmers Union.

Sam and Chris moved to Mansfield in 2001, where he enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles, hiking, and traveling. He volunteered with the bluebird program at Malabar, the HOSTS program in Mansfield Schools, Feed the Needy at St. Peter's, and the Mohican Trails Club. He was a member of St. Peter's Parish.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Mary Ann in 1978, and his brother-in-law Vincent Burr.

He is survived by his wife Christine, daughter Laurie of Mansfield, sons Andrew (Barbi) of Plymouth and Todd of Austinburg; grandchildren Austin and Elizabeth Judson and Brandon and Haley Reed; sisters Frances (Ted) Norris of Plymouth and Carol (Edward) Cass of Punta Gorda, Florida; brother Charles (Ruth) Judson of Jefferson; sisters-in-law Jenny (Tom) Hogan and Martha (Mike) Snell; brothers-in-law Jerry (Carol) Burr and Gene (Rosemary) Burr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday, February 3, 2014 at 1 pm in St. Peter's Catholic Church, Mansfield. Mass will be Celebrated by The Rev. Father Jeremy Miller. The family will receive friends the hour prior to the service in the church sanctuary. Interment will be held at a later date in Austinburg Center Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Sam may be made to MedCentral Hospice.
