Sylvester "Syl" Thomas

MANSFIELD: Sylvester "Syl" Thomas, 65, of Mansfield, died Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born May 16, 1949 in New Washington, Ohio to the late Charles L. and Elizabeth M. (Hiler) Thomas.

Syl retired from General Motors after 35 years of service. He was a huge supporter of both boys and girls basketball programs at St. Peter's Catholic School and was an assistant coach of the 2012 Final Four Girls Basketball Team. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and was often seen around the church and school offering his help however he could.

Syl was a humble man who never asked for anything in return. He adored his grandchildren and treasured his time spent with his family and friends. He made many special friends throughout his life and his involvement in various groups supplied ample opportunity to constantly meet new people who became fast friends. He had a great sense of humor and many quirks. True to his nature, he did everything in a large, abundant way. Giving with his heart and talents were joys in his life.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Christy Thomas; four grandchildren, Morgan, Mason, Lily and Lucy; and many very close friends who were like family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Harriger.
