Thomas J. Woodard

MANSFIELD: Thomas J. Woodard, passed away early Sunday morning, November 18, 2012. He was 95 years old. He was born in Jasper, Michigan to Boyd and Ruth (McCroy) Woodard on January 3, 1917. Tom graduated from Sand Creek High School in Michigan in 1935. He went to work at a stove plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He worked there until it was closed down. On June 18, 1938 he married Evelyn Pauline Matney. They were married for 74 years. In 1943 they moved to Mansfield and he went to work at Dominion Electric and worked there until it was sold and closed. He then worked at Ontario Schools and retired from there. He worked at Snow Trails for years and loved it there as he loved the men and the owner. Tom and Evelyn joined the First English Lutheran Church in the mid-1950s. They did a lot of traveling and had been in almost all the states. His hobby was steam engines and he had three at one time, Advance Rumley, Gaar-Scott, and an Advance. Tom and three other men started the Richland County Steam Threshers. He served as president for a number of years and Evelyn was secretary and treasurer. They had their show at Malabar Farm for years.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; daughter, Sharon Champion of Parker, AZ; son, David Woodard of Mansfield; grandsons, Van Champion of Huntington Beach, CA, Bret Woodard of Mansfield, and Zachery Woodard of Crestline; granddaughter, Vicki (Roger) Qurion of Bolder City, NV; and seven great grandchildren, Cody, Summer, Brittany, Alana, Dillan, Silas, and Rejan.

Friends may call Friday, November 23, 2012 from 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-8:00 pm at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd., Ontario, conducted by Pastor Andrew W. Jones. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 10:30 am. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
