Velma M. Hammett

MANSFIELD: Velma M. Hammett, age 73, resident of Mansfield died Monday, June 24, 2013 in MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital following a six month courageous battle with cancer.

Born July 28, 1939 in Waverly, OH to Walter and Beatrice (Smith) Lawson, she was a Mansfield area resident the majority of her life. Velma was a 1957 graduate of Madison High School and was formerly employed with Mansfield Tire Co., Meijers and Kaufmanns. She was a member of the First Wesleyan Church. Velma enjoyed playing golf, being outdoors and tending to her flowers and yardwork. Her family was of the upmost importance and she always made time to support her children's and grandchildren's school and sporting events.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur M. Hammett, whom she wed May 22, 1959 ; one son, Gene (Stacey) Hammett of Loganville, GA; one daughter, Melanie (Lonny) Milks of Mansfield; seven grandchidlren Danika, Megan, Bailee and Griffin Hammett, McKenna, Kayla and Nick Milks; her daughter-in-law, Marina Hammett of Shelby; two brothers Thomas Lawson and Linda Songer of Butler, and Robert (Nancy) Lawson of Round Rock, Texas, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Hammett in 2012 and one brother Michael Lawson.

Velma's family would like to express a sincere thanks to Dr. Viswanathan and her staff as well as the staff with MedCentral Hospice and Cancer Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Friday June 28, 2013 at the First Wesleyan Church, in Ontario. Pastor Keith E. Carlisle will officiate with interment in Mansfield Memorial Park . Friends may call at the church Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Memorial expressions may be made to Rahab's Hideaway in c/o: First Wesleyan Church, 1908 Park Ave. W., Ontario, OH 44906.
