Willis Sowers(1925 - 2013)

Willis Lemoyne Sowers

ONTARIO: Willis Lemoyne Sowers, age 87, of Ontario, passed away Monday afternoon, February 25, 2013 at Crestwood Care Center. He was born September 14, 1925 in Perrysville, Ohio to the late Lloyd Leroy and Thelma Marie (Banks) Sowers. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving during WWII in Iwo Jima and in the occupation of Japan. Willis was one of the original 12 members of the Springfield Township Fire Department started in 1948. Willis was retired from Star Tire in Mansfield in 1981. He also had previously worked as a bus driver for Ontario Schools, driver coordinator at Graham Auto Mall and as a barber for 15 years in Ontario. He was a member of Ontario V.F.W. Post #7651, Sons of Herman, Baku Grotto and member of Marquis Lodge #690, F. & A.M. since 1958, earning his 32nd Degree designation. Willis enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing pool and cards, and all sports. He enjoyed bowling and was past secretary and life member of Mansfield Bowling Association. Traveling was a favorite activity and he visited 49 of the 50 United States.

Willis is survived by his wife, Barbara A. (Stewart) Sowers; son, Talle Sowers of Glendale, AZ; daughter, Carol Newport of Glendale, AZ; grandson, Tyler Sowers; two brothers, Lynn (Jan) Sowers of Cody, WY, Arliss (Dayna) Sowers of Mansfield; several step children and step grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy (Shrader) Sowers in August 1982; sister, Wuanita Sowers; two brothers, Richard and Eugene (Jane) Sowers.

Family and friends may visit from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 28, 2013 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd. Masonic services will be held at 7:30 p.m. A graveside service will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Mansfield Memorial Park. The Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will present military honors. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
