MANSFIELD: Winifred Hughes, 88, formerly of Mansfield and currently residing in Dorothy Love Retirement Home, died Tuesday morning, December 18, 2012 at Wilson Hospital in Sidney, Ohio following a brief illness. Born October 24, 1924 in Buchanan, Kentucky she was the daughter of Alonzo "Lon" and Nancy "Nannie" (Ruggles) Byington. She worked for Park Avenue Bakery in the 1960's and later at Sport and Toy City. A great cook, she loved to cook and bake for her family and friends and enjoyed when they came over and sat around the kitchen table for hours talking. She enjoyed shopping, especially at small dress shops, decorating her home for Christmas and was known for her beautiful quilt making. A devoted caretaker to many in her family, she had a great sense of humor, always the one to tease and never knew a stranger.
She is survived by her daughter, Judy (Nick) Altstadt of Sidney, Ohio; her son, Gregory (Linda) Hughes of Mansfield; seven grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Hughes in October 1978; two sons, Ron and Jack Hughes; and four sisters, Bessie, Nola, Delphia and Garlie.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2012 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road, Ontario conducted by her grandson, Rev. Michael Hughes. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Friends may call from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home on Friday.
