Earl R. "Poogie" Young

LOUDONVILLE: Earl R. "Poogie" Young, 89, of Loudonville passed away Monday morning, September 14, 2015 in Colonial Manor Health Care Center following a lengthy illness.

Earl was born April 8, 1926 in Loudonville and was the son of the late Alfred A. and Lulu Viola (Schaffer) Young. He was a 1945 graduate of Loudonville High School where he served as drum major in the band for three years. Earl entered the US Army Air Corps in 1944 and completed his high school requirements while on leave from the Army in 1945. Along with his brothers and sister, he owned and operated Young's Arcade and Pool Room on Main Street in Loudonville until 1972. Following the sale of the family business, Earl worked as a real estate agent for Charles Bernhard and was Canteen Manager for the Loudonville Eagles for a few years. Earl was a life time member of the American Legion Post 257 of Loudonville and Ashland County Voiture #800 of 40et8. He enjoyed fishing, especially the several trips to Canada with friends, playing cards, and mushroom hunting with his first wife Bonnie.

Earl is survived by two sons: Stephen (Lynne) Young of Berlin Hts., and Douglas (Shirley) Young of Huntingdon, PA; five step-children: David (Cindy) Hollinger of Bowling Green, Jay (Jane) Hollinger of Loudonville, Dan Hollinger of Ashland, Jim (Vivian) Hollinger of West Islip, NY, and Kathy (Greg) Gardner of Loudonville; four grandchildren: Shawn (Alan) Scroggins, Matthew (Erica) Young, Christopher Young, and Kelly Young; 14 step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren: Alex, Isabella, Paige, Morgan, Casey, Christian, Elizabeth, Olivia, Cody, Ethan, and Kallie; and ten step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife: Bonnie M. (Kettering) Young, whom he married December 8, 1945 and she died November 17, 1993; his second wife: Annabelle (Byers) Hollinger Young, whom he married June 12, 1995 and she died October 2, 2011; his parents; six brothers: Harley, Raymond, Richard, Kenny, Ralph, and Theodore Young; and one sister: Florence Bickel.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 18 at 11:00 am in LINDSEY FUNERAL HOME, LOUDONVILLE with Pastor John Temple officiating. Burial with military honors conducted by the American Legion and the VFW will follow in Loudonville Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 4-7 PM in Lindsey Funeral Home.
